The San Nicolás Co-Cathedral
Well, now I`m going to give you some information about this building.
This construction began in the year 1613, replacing a previous mosque. It is built in the Herrerian style and is situated in the center of the city. The architect Agustín Bernardino, disciple of Herrera, started the construction and worked there until he died. It was necesary the work of other three architects to finish the Co-Cathedral, who maintained the original ideas of Agustín Bernardino. The historic quarter, where it is located, contributes to the greatness of the exterior of the co-cathedral.
It's a Latin cross church with a single nave and several chapels. Inside we can see as main elements the 17th century cloister with two baroque doors and a series of grilles from the 18th century. The altar and the blue 45 metres high cupola are remarkable too. Below the cupola is the Communion Chapel, which is one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish baroque. The altar of Saint Nicholas of Bari is also Baroque and is located in the apse of the central nave. The steps of the high altar are made of marble from Genoa.
Recently, the interior has been restored to mark the celebration of The Light of Images exhibition in Alicante, which tries to recuperate and promote the Region of Valencia's artistic heritage.
At the altar of Saint Nicholas of Bari we can see one of the first examples of solomonic columns located in an altar. In the centre of the altar we can find a nich with a statue of the saint from the 16th century. Below the sculture of Saint Nicholas of Bari there is a bust-reliquary of Santa Felicitas.
Finally, the Concathedral has got 10 bells. The oldest, called Sacramento, was made in 1681 and its weight is 38kg. The biggest is called Fernanda Nicolasa with 1729kg. But the best sound comes from Rosario Bárbara (with 1589kg and made in 1888).
Thank you for attention, I wish you'll enjoy the rest of the visit.
